Who We Are

We are the little white church located on the north end of Camano Island, WA. Our highly visible, close proximity to the main route on or off the island means those living or visiting this beautiful rural area 60 miles north of Seattle will travel right past the church whose light in the steeple is a symbolic, constant reminder that Our Savior, Jesus Christ is a welcoming light in the darkness.

  • A Christian Church. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world. By Jesus's death and resurrection, we are made right with God as a gift of grace.

  • A Worshiping Church. We gather around Word and Sacraments to praise God.

  • A Welcoming Church. We welcome all to come share in our journey of following Jesus.

  • A vital Community of Faith worshiping in the Camano Island/Stanwood area since 1890.

  • God's people of all ages and from all walks of life who are committed to growing in faith; sharing His love and serving our neighbor, near and far.

  • Camano Lutheran Church is a member of the Northwest Synod of ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). You can discover more about the ELCA by visiting the Northwest Washington Synod web page www.lutheranssw.org to learn what Lutherans believe and how they practice their faith.

Our History

Originally known as the Lutheran Evangelical Congregation of Camano Island, the new congregation of approximately 41 met at the little one room schoolhouse which was located across the road from where the church now stands. The schoolhouse was eventually relocated to its existing site adjoining the historic sanctuary and is now known as Pioneer Hall. Construction of the sanctuary began in 1900, when two local families (Sivert Johnson and J.P. Larson) donated land for the church, which was modeled after country churches in Scandinavia. The church was built totally with volunteer labor and using materials which were transported by horse drawn wagon over primitive dirt roads and the Stillaguamish ferry (which was the only access to the island)! Total cost for materials....$904 for the church; $70.40 for the bell which is still rung every Sunday; $9.60 for the statue of Jesus that overlooks the altar and pulpit, both of which were hand carved by J.P. Larson and K.P. Frostad with 11 different types of exotic woods that were gifts to Mr. Larson from captains of sailing ships arriving to pick up lumbar at the Utsalady mill where he worked. The original pump organ was restored to operating condition in late 2016 and sits in the narthex. The beautiful stained-glass windows were removed from Trinity Lutheran Church in Parkland, WA in 1956 and line both sides of the sanctuary; four years prior they were able to call their first full-time, paid pastor. Over the years the church has purchased adjoining parcels of land and constructed additional buildings which are in constant use for various church programs and by community organizations. The site is on the State Register of Historical Sites and sometimes hosts guided tours during community events.

What We Believe

Lutherans are Christians who accept the teachings of Martin Luther (1483-1546) a German theologian who posted 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg University on October 31, 1517. (celebrated as Reformation Sunday on today's church calendar). Lutherans believe the convictions of his teachings and Camano Lutheran is open to all peoples, regardless of background. We invite you to learn more about:

  • Being saved by the grace of God alone, not by anything we do.

  • Jesus' death and resurrection and how we are made right with God as a gift of grace.

  • Salvation which comes only through faith and trust in God, who through Christ promises forgiveness, life and salvation.

  • God revealed as one God in three persons, Father, Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit.

  • Jesus being revealed in the Written Word of the Bible, the authority for our faith and life.

New member classes are held several times a year. Please contact Pastor Scott or the church office for more information on the teachings of Luther, what we believe or to see about the schedule for a new member class and/or baptism.
